We wrapped up our time at Great Wolf Lodge yesterday after 6 plus hours of fun in the water. It would have been nice to have been able to go back to the room and take a break and then maybe go for a second round of water fun after dinner, but we had only booked for one night. We had never been there before so I didn't know what our "limit" was. The kids were absolutely (as in meltdown) exhausted, so it's probably better we kept it to just two days.
I want to remember the moments from Great Wolf so excuse me while I talk about my children.
Nicholas, at 8 years old, was tall enough to ride every ride. He's not very adventurous and prefers to stick with what he knows and what he feels comfortable with. He doesn't like it if you "make" him say hello to a friend he sees out and about and that sort of thing. So, it was no surprise that getting him to go on some of the bigger water slides took a little convincing. Not wanting to upset his parents, he agreed to go, and he was of course glad he did!
He loved all the rides and after conquering the biggest ride at the park decided to go it alone on some of the slides he had originally done tandem with either George or myself. He was proud of himself for going it alone. I know it seems simple, but I'm a firm believer that moments like these build his confidence. Giving him the opportunity to conquer something that seems just a little beyond his reach. He also felt very proud that he was the only kid old/big enough to ride ALL the slides.
Ella is a little more adventurous than Nicholas, but still in the grand scheme of things a cautious child. I thought she'd be ready and willing to try all the rides without any coaxing, however it did take a little coercion to get her to go. I don't think Ella was really scared, she was just unaware as what to expect. Once she figured out the slides weren't scary, she became a pro going again and again. She exclaimed, "that was totally wicked."
Jack wasn't old enough to ride the big slides, but there were still some pretty significant slides he was able to do. He either wasn't old enough to realize maybe he should be scared or just didn't give a #$%^. He climbed up to the slide without reservation and came down cheerful. To be honest, he could have cared less about the slides. He was much happier shooting water from the jet skis in the baby pool.
All the kids had fun in the wave pool, playing with the inner tubes and riding the waves. The temperature of the pool was little too cool for my liking. What I realized about an indoor water park is, without the sun beating down to warm you up, you spend the majority of the time shivering.
One that note, the highlight of our trip was the hot tub. I don't think I even have any pictures of the kids in the hot tub, but they spent so much time in there. I swear they should just make the temperature of all the pools a little warmer and everyone would be happy. The hot tub wasn't the kind that was hot, hot, hot, but definitely about 10 degrees warmer than the other pools. Whatever makes them happy I suppose.
The biggest thing that I enjoyed about the whole trip is just the simple fact of spending time with my family. I love being together. I know that I'll miss these days in the not so distant future, so I try to soak in each and every moment. I'm going to miss these "babies".
