Once again, this is an update to my surgery so if you don't want to hear about peeing and such, feel free to pass on this one.
Ok so I haven't been able to pee on my own since the surgery. I can sometimes get small amounts of urine out on my own, but it's rare. I've been using self-caths to empty my bladder. To say it is frustrating is a huge understatement.
I went to see my doctor today and she wants me to wait it out a little longer. She wants me to give it a full two weeks to see if I'm able to go on my own. Generally urinary retention after this type of surgery is due to swelling and it can take a significant amount of time for that swelling to go down. So now I wait.
In the meantime I'll continue to self-cath and she gave me Rapaflo (a medicine usually used in men to help with urinary retention due to an enlarged prostate) to maybe help things along.
My doctor says she performs about 200 to 300 urethral slings (the procedure I had) a year and she sees urinary retention like mine happen 1 to 2 times a year. Oh just great!
If I am unable to pee on my own in 2 weeks (by July 12th) then she will schedule another procedure where they "snip" and loosen the sling. Patient who have the "snip" still have a 60% success rate with the sling. That means that there's still a 40% chance this all would have been for nothing.
If that's the case, then I can have the procedure done again somewhere down the road (6 months). I'm trying not to look that far into the future and am really hoping and praying this all resolves on its own.
I'm beyond frustrated and beginning to feel a little sad. I know that's pathetic as there are worse things in life to worry about, but this was supposed to be a simple procedure that would IMPROVE my quality of life. I'm trying not to stress out about things, but it's hard for me. I'm trying to keep a positive outlook and I hope that helps.
Thanks to everyone who has supported me. I really appreciate all the text/phone calls/facebook messages/comments from everyone. It means a lot to know everyone cares! Continued prayers to the peeing Gods are welcome!
xoxo
Susan
