If you're not a crafty person, please don't go away. This is BY FAR the easiest craft I've ever posted on Mom Swim Bike Run, but also one of my favorites. I heard about this idea from a friend (hi Tonya) of my mom's who told my mom to do this with my kids (they were talking about it on Facebook). This ideas was too cute, however, and I stole it to do myself.
What you'll need:
- Plain white porcelain (or anything that is oven safe) plates (you can buy them at the Dollar store but I got these for $2.99 at IKEA)
- Colorful Sharpie Markers
Now all you have to do is sit back and watch your kids draw with the markers on the plates. Oh and if you're me also try not to freak out that they're making "mistakes".
This is definitely not a craft for a Type A mom like myself, but I tried VERY hard to just let them do whatever they wanted.
I did encourage them to practice on paper first and then draw it on their plates. This was actually more for their benefit as I only had three plates so there was no room for error.
After the children have created their masterpieces put the plates in the oven to "set" the marker. I baked them at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
I told my kids we'd be using these plates to set out cookies for Santa at Christmas, so they all went with the Christmas theme.
Cookies for Santa with reindeer, Christmas tree and snowman for Nicholas.
A snow woman (with fancy eyelashes) and snowflakes by Ella.
And finally, a Christmas tree with "rug" aka tee skirt by Jack. I swear he knows how to write his name. I'm not quite sure why it came out the way it did. I am not type A, I am not Type A, I am not Type A.... So it doesn't matter right?
I really wish I would have known about this years ago because I think it would be so fun to have a whole collection of plates from over the years. I plan to do it again next year (and beyond) but I don't know how long the tradition will last now that the kids are getting older. How much would you love to come to a party at my house and eat appetizers off of these too cute plates?
