Mother of Three
38, Pennsylvania When I was 32 years old George and I moved back to Pittsburgh from Baltimore, MD and chose a well north (of Pittsburgh) suburb to live called Mars. Shortly thereafter, I met my running inspiration, Tracey when our children were on the same soccer team.
I'd run along the streets of Mars (that have no sidewalks) and often times have to dive into the bushes for fear of being hit by a car. Later I took to MUCH earlier run times to avoid traffic and hopefully avoid an accident. Now I feel safer running at the park on the running path.
The back story of my running character if you picked up right now would be: One time skinny girl who ate whatever she wanted, turned mother of three, started on a fitness journey as a New Year's resolution in 2008.
I never say never. I really am a believer that anything is possible. Most things just take hard work and dedication. The problem is most people don't want to put in the work to achieve their goals. So many people are looking for a everything to be handed over on a silver platter. I have no problem working hard for everything I achieve in life and I generally give 110% to everything I do.
The Pittsburgh Fall really is the perfect running weather. Well, if it's not raining that is. When you hit a perfectly sunny, 55 degree day where the air is crisp and the sun is warming your face.... awww it doesn't get much better.
I love running in my 2XU compression tights. They are super comfortable and they never fall down or get uncomfortable even during long distances. They're tight, but not in a "dig into your body" kind of way. I'm not sure if they aid in circulation and recovery (I mean how does one really know) but they feel great.
When I run I'm not really sure what I'm doing besides just putting one foot in front of the other. When people talk about stride length and foot strike my eyes go crossed. It's hard enough for me to make my body move forward without worrying about perfecting it all.
If you believe Born to Run, running is your primal weapon. I always say people expect running to be easy because it is something that is so innate. When I see my kids run they go all out, full force, heels clicking their bums. I wish we all still held own to running like we did as kids and it really could be everyone's primal weapon. I'm glad that everyone isn't running, however, because if Armageddon is around the corner, I only have to faster than one person. Ha! Seriously, I hope I can inspire just one person to take up the primal weapon-- running!
I ran this past weekend in capri tights (see above) and a t shirt. I did, however, see one guy running in nothing but a hot pink speedo. True story!
Being a runner, a marathoner, a crossfitter, and someone who generally works out 5 to 6 days a week doesn't mean a whole lot. For whatever reason (that I'll probably never understand) I still get winded walking up the steps.
Running helped build me long lasting friendships. I feel like my life has turned in such a different direction since I discovered running and often wonder how if that one little thing changed, and I was no longer a runner, how my life would be altered.
If we all ran I honestly believe the world would be a better place. Endorphins make you happy!!!
