Today I decided, that come hell or high water, I was running outdoors. I don't care if Pittsburgh doesn't realize it's spring, I can NOT take running on the treadmill one more solitary second. I decided to go to North Park and meet up with a friend (Megan) from pharmacy school.
The North Park loop is 5 miles, but if you cut over the bridge, you can make it 4.5 miles. I decided I'd try to do 5 knowing I can always cut over the bridge if need be. When I met Megan this morning I told her I haven't run more than 2 miles in 12 weeks. Her response? "Are you sure you want to do the WHOLE loop?" So yeah, I realized maybe 4.5 would just be good enough today.
I warned Megan it would be slow and there would most likely be walking. She was totally cool with whatever I wanted. Thanks Megan!
I started off kind of "fast" but quickly realized I was never going to maintain that pace. The thing about the North Park loop is that it's full of hills. My legs do NOT love hills... like at all. At all, at all! I need to find some flat ground around these parts.
Anyway, the run went about like I expected. I walked a handful of times and it was rather slow, but I'm running and running OUTSIDE in the sunshine and that makes me happy. I don't care if it was slower than I like, I have barely run in 12 weeks and I busted out 4.43 miles today! Boo-ya!
Mile 1: 10:39
Mile 2: 11:25
Mile 3: 11:20
Mile 4: 11:46 (lots of hills and walking)
Mile .43: 11:21 average pace
Total: 50:07
Average: 11:18
I wish I could say this was a pain-free run and I wish I could say it was easy. It was neither of those two things and that makes me incredibly sad. I don't know why I keep putting off the inevitable. I MUST make a doctor's appointment for blood work. It's really my only chance at answers right now. Clearly, I'm thrilled!
