Ok so they other day I was sitting around my completely empty house waiting for the kids to get off the bus. All I had was my cell phone and Jack. I had seen a bunch of people planking on Instagram (hey you should be following me by the way @momswimbikerun) and I decided to see how long I could plank. I honestly figured I could hold it about 1 minute. Way back when (as in a LONG time ago) when I used to go to Pilates, our instructor would have us hold our plank for 1 minute. I remember shaking and barely being able to finish.
So I gave Jack our game plan. I would start the stopwatch on my phone, hand the phone off to him where he was to take one picture of me (you know for the blog) straight on and one far away showing my whole body so every could see my plank. Please keep in mind, this child is 5. He could do it right?
Ok so Jack is ready and I'm ready and I hit start on the stopwatch. I hand the phone off to Jack and immediately think, why the heck did I try to do this? I'm so weak and I'm not going to be able to hold this for a full minute. Jack gets the front shot and I tell him to now get the shot of my whole body. He lets me know "You don't fit all in". "Turn it to the side Jack," I say. He turns it and announces that he's gotten the shot. I tell him to hand me back the phone.
At this point I'm thinking this is pretty hard and I think to myself, I've probably not even made it one minute. Time just ticks by when you do stuff like this, doesn't it? So Jack hands me the phone and I bring up the stopwatch. I cringe as I glance down to see my time. 1:36. Shut the front door! (Yes it takes 1:36 for a 5 year old to take 2 pictures).
At this point I tell myself to focus and breath and I can give up at 1:45. That would be 45 seconds MORE THAN my original goal. I get to 1:45 and think, heck I can make it to 2:00. My back starts to hurt which tells me I'm losing form. Make it to 2:00, I tell myself. 2:00 comes. I should not give up until my body gives out... and I dropped. I gave up on myself. I LET myself drop. Just as I was promising myself that I would let my body dictate when I would give up, I gave up and dropped. I wish I would have held on a little longer. I held my plank for 2:01.4.
Despite being pretty pleased with myself for holding my plank for a whole minute longer than I intended, I was pretty upset with myself for giving up. And that's where the idea of the plank challenge began.
So here's the deal. I will be hosting a plank challenge. All you have to do to enter the "contest" is like my MomSwimBikeRun Facebook page and then share a photo (or video if you'd like) of you doing a plank on my MomSwimBikeRun Facebook page and include the amount of time you held your plank. I'll be holding the contest (and accepting pictures) from now until January 31st at 11:59 pm EST. Feel free to post your pictures on Instagram as well. Use hashtag #momswimbikerunplank!
After you share your original picture it is up to you to practice your planking DAILY!!! I'm personally going to try to improve my planking skills by a few seconds daily. If I happen to improve 10 seconds in one day, that's great. I'm sure some days I'll digress.
By January 31st at 11:59 pm EST you will need to COMMENT AGAIN ON YOUR ORIGINAL PICTURE and let me know how much your time has improved. The person with the greatest improvement will be the winner. In case of a tie the winner will be selected at random.
We are going by the HONOR SYSTEM here. It's not fair to cheat yourself and low ball your time on day one! Not that any of you would do that (hey why didn't I think of that?). Also it doesn't matter if you can plank for 2 days of 2 seconds. This contest is NOT about how long you can plank but how much you can IMPROVE over the course of January.
The winner will receive a $25 gift card to anywhere you choose. The only requirement is that I be able to purchase said gift card online and ship it directly to your house (USA Only).
Let the planking begin and good luck!!!! I can't wait to see everyone planking away on my page!!!
