I had 17 people staying in my house all weekend. A bunch of family and friends were in town for help celebrate all the kids' birthdays (more on that later). So needless to say I'm a little exhausted. So this might be short, but I've got to get back to some consistent blogging. You guys would be sad if I didn't!
Anyway I met Christi....
... and Tracey to do a bike ride.
Not just any bike ride, but the bike portion of the Olympic Triathlon (Mighty Moraine) that I'm doing in a couple of weeks.
I heard the course was VERY hilly, so I wanted to see it for myself. I'm really glad that I did the course today because now I'll know what to expect. The course was brutal, however. It was hill after hill without much relief and not a whole lot of downhills.
I know that doesn't really seem possible with the whole "what goes up must come down theory" but I swear that did NOT hold true on this dumb ass ride!
We didn't start until much later than we'd normally ride, so it was hot and the sun was blazing. That did not make climbing all those hills any easier. I was trying not to feel discouraged on the ride, but it was clear I was bringing up the rear. I suck on hills. My cardio just isn't where it needs to be after my surgery sabbatical (by the way I have a Dr's appointment tomorrow to discuss my peeing situation, which is STILL not right).
I told Tracey today that I won't allow myself to get discouraged on race day. I could have easily scrapped the whole triathlon season, but I signed up for a race that won't be easy and I should be proud of myself for just doing it. So that's the outlook I'm going into this thing with. Just finish and have some fun!
By the time it was all said and done we had gone 27.01 miles in 2:08:01 which is a 12.7 mph average. I hope on race day I can improve that a little bit and average over 13 mph.
Thanks to Tracey and Christi for hanging with me and making the ride more tolerable, I wish you'd be there by my side on race day!
Oh but don't think the bike was good enough for Tracey. OH NO! She MADE me (yes made me) go out and do a 10 minute run afterwards. No part of me wanted to go out and run. My legs hurt, it was so hot out and there was no shade on the trail.
Nevertheless, I did go out and run. "Just 10 minutes, just 10 minutes," that's what Tracey kept saying. We were running a pretty quick pace (for ME) especially for just having ridden 27 miles. We were keeping about a 9:45 pace for the first 6 minutes and then I almost went into cardiac arrest and told Tracey to please slow down. We finished .97 miles in 10 minutes. I'll take it.
So no I didn't want to run, but I'm glad Tracey made me do it. Whoever said, you never regret a run, was right!
Bring on Mighty Moraine!
