Hello Everyone. I've been enjoying myself on vacation and I'll be back soon to tell you about the adventures with my family. Until then here's a post from Danni. Enjoy!
Hi Mom Swim Bike Run readers, I’m Danni at RunFitMama.com. I’m excited to be here writing a guest post again for Susan as she heads out on her family vacation. Last year I wrote about getting back in shape after having a baby, little did I know that I’d be needing my own advice this year. On November 7, 2011, I found out I was pregnant with baby #2, and along with elatedness and excitement came vain fear. I gained nearly 80 pounds while pregnant with Jack and it took about a year and a half to lose it all.
When I found out I was pregnant, I had just run my 8th half marathon, and a PR nonetheless. I vowed to continue running as long as possible.
With my first pregnancy, I was so worried that I was going to do something to hurt the baby. I realized that if it’s good for you, it’s probably good for the baby, too. So these last nine months I’ve remained pretty active- running, hiking and teaching yoga.
Although I dreamed of running up until my due date, that was not my reality. Around 30 weeks, running started to feel uncomfortable. I felt heavy and crampy and my hips started to hurt. Sadly, I stopped running. I felt bad about because I was feeling like I gave up, but now I’m thankful I was able to run as long as I could.
Now I’m walking, using free weights and doing some body weight exercises. It’s not the same as going for a run, but it feels good. If anyone out there is wondering about staying in shape while pregnant (of course consult your doctor first), I say if you were doing it before it’s probably fine to continue doing (of course within reason). . Don’t get me wrong, I have an amazing son to show for the 80 pounds I gained the first time, but I wasn’t in a healthy state at the end of pregnancy. Now at almost 39 weeks, I’ve gained 33 pounds and feel so much healthier and active than last time.
Come visit me at runningmamavt.blogspot.com, where pretty soon (hopefully!) I’ll be attempting to run again. I’ve even signed up for a fall half marathon- we’ll see how that goes!
