Sorry I've been AWOL. This is the first time I have opened my computer since we left the house on Friday. I've having a fun time and just haven't had the time to get my stuff together. Don't worry, I'll be back to tell you all about our travel adventures. In the meantime enjoy this post from Kortni.
Hi! My name is Kortni and I am very excited to blog for MomSwimBikeRun while she is enjoying her vacation. I live just north of Houston with my family. I have been married to Drew for 15 years and we just celebrated with an amazing trip to NYC! We have four children: Emma is 9, Jonah is almost 7, Samuel is 4, and Elena is 2 ½. I am a wife, a mom, a friend, a runner, and could do none of it without God! You can check out my blog at: http://todayistheday-kortni.blogspot.com
One of my favorite scriptures is Hebrews 12:1-2.
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
This scripture relates to family life and to running both of which are near and dear to my heart. As a mom I need tons of perseverance to get through the day. As a runner I would not see the finish line without perseverance. I love when I find a verse or section of scripture that relates to several areas of my life. There are several other verses in the chapter that are just rich with meaning:
vs 7 "Endure hardship as discipline..."
vs 12-13 "Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. Make level paths for your feet..."
vs 28 "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire."
As a runner, there are so many different types of races to choose from….the 5K, the 10K, the half marathon, the full marathon, and the ultra. Then there are all the other distances in between. The choices are endless. Regardless of the distance, each race requires some amount time commitment, effort, perseverance, and energy. I did not train for my first 5K and it was good. I finished and was happy to be finished, but it could have been way better. However, when I decided to test my limits with the half and full marathon I had to train and train hard. But, it was all worth it! The reward for achieving those goals was a memory of a lifetime…days I will never forget. Isn’t that true in our daily lives too?
All the things I do each and every day requires the same amount of effort if not more than I put into training for a race. Most days I think running is the easiest part of my day! As women we run so many races. We are the great multi-taskers, right? Each race requires a different pair of shoes. Being a runner I am partial to sneakers, but they are not always appropriate. We need our sneakers to keep up with all the housework….laundry, grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning. If we have children, we might need an extra pair of sneakers to manage all their activities including school work, practices, games, and social outings. We need our casual, but cute shoes for lunch dates with our girl friends. There are the stilettos for dancing and date nights with our husbands. And, of course, we have our work and church shoes.
Many days I feel like I have just run a marathon and all I have done is take care of four children and my husband. Way too many times during the day I know I have failed miserably. Am I glorifying God by the way I run these races....probably not on most days. I guess it would depend on the moment, the child, the day. But, the training each daily race provides makes the next race easier or smoother. I have a better plan of action, a better mindset, a calmer heart and mind.
I have many races to run this week. I probably have more races scheduled than I should. However, I know that all my past discipline has strengthened me so I can run the races with perseverance. God is there for me. All I have to do is ask!
Good luck with your road races and daily races!
