So I told you that we left on Friday to travel umpteen million miles across the United States from Austin, TX to Pittsburgh, PA. We set out on Friday morning with the intentions of driving 13 hours to Nasvhille, TN where we had our room booked for the evening.
I'll admit I was a little apprehensive about traveling with 3 kids in a car for over 24 hours. I mean would I be normal if I thought that sounded like a jolly good time?
I armed the kids with a bunch of fun things to do including an activity book for each kid with a full map of the United States. I'll be honest, it was a big hit with Ella and Jack, but I don't think Nicholas ever even looked at it.
We also passed the time doing Madlibs, which was probably more for me than them. I really loved these when I was a kid. The kids do like the funny stories though, and it IS educational because now Jack and Ella can tell you what a noun and adjective are.
I'm not going to lie, however, the biggest hit and lifesaver of the trip was the DVD player. We had 14 movies to watch and I think we watched almost all of them at some point throughout the trip. Even if the kids weren't actively watching, it was on.
The other big hit of the trip was the car "zipline". Basically, I printed out a car from the computer and attached it to curling ribbon. I marked the ribbon with marks for every hour we would be driving. The car started waaaaaay back in the back of the car and with each hour the kids got to move it up. Even though the kids continually asked if they could move the car, at least they never asked, "are we there yet?". They knew we wouldn't be there until the car hit my visor.
I spent the majority of the time with my feet up playing on my phone. Yes it is possible to spend 13 plus hours on your phone. I played all my games, read blogs and did my Continuing Education for my pharmacist license. I had 30 credits to do by September and I had zero completed before this car ride. I now have 16 finished and I will finish the rest on the way home. Yay me!
George made fun of me for buying glow necklaces for the kids, but these were the highlight of the trip as the day started to wind down and everyone was getting a little more bored and sleepy. The provided about an hours worth of entertainment.
But it wasn't long until Ella and Jack finally called it quits and finally shut their eyes. We lost them to the sandman about an hour before our trip was over the first night.
I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am about how well the first day of the trip went. I'm so proud of my kiddos for behaving so well. No one really ever complained and there was no fighting.
After having left the house at 7 am we arrived at our hotel at almost 11 pm where we stopped off to sleep for the night.
