Anyway, today is one of those days that I'm blogging particularly for myself. I doubt you'll care much about this, but it's something I'll want to remember forever.
Today Nicholas ended an awesome baseball season. He played T-ball once when he was 4 and then took up baseball again last spring. He was so new and had a lot to learn. His talent developed quickly and I think his coaches started to take notice of Nicholas. Here we are 2 seasons later and Nicholas is playing for Coach Tony (the assistant coach on his first team) on the Braves.
Tony is a pretty special person as is his wife Valerie (the team mom). These two put so much time and effort into our team and they both have a deep love for baseball. It shows too, because all these kids respond to Tony's tutelage and they are having fun while doing it. Nicholas did learn during his last 2 seasons, but he definitely wasn't having nearly as much fun. I feel it's really important at this age to keep a balance between the learning and the fun and Tony has that all figured out.
Friday night we played our last regular season game (we still had the end of season tournament to go) against the only undefeated team in our league. Tony and another coach, Coach Shawn agreed to shave their heads if we beat them. Since Coach George and Coach Jason are already bald, they agreed to paint their fingernails pink.
You know where this is going right? We won!!! We beat the undefeated Cardinals and the boys got the chance to shave their coaches' heads.
Each kid got to take a swipe and they really got a kick out of it.
Val got to paint the boys' nails.
Isn't he pirty?
I know it might not seem like a big deal to any of you, but to me it means a lot that the coaches agreed to shave their heads. I think Tony was particularly attached to his hair and only did it for "his" boys. I really believe he loved this team and cared for each and every one of them. We all became a little family and it's very sad to see it all end today (we lost in a single elimination tournament).
Don't get me wrong, I realize this is little league and many baseball teams will come and go. I just think this team was special and I don't think it was just me that felt that way. No matter how many coaches Nicholas plays for, I think he'll always remember the coaches that shaved their heads.
No scratch that... he'll always remember the coach that taught him how to play and how to love the game
-- He'll always remember Coach Tony!
