That however is only the first of my mistakes. Do you recall me telling you this was supposed to be a SUMMERTIME project? Yeah well, I took the kids to Walmart the other day and let them pick out their favorite Duck Tape and told them it would be for a project later (I intended to keep it a secret). By the time we left Walmart they had gotten it out of me that we were going to attempt to make Duck Tape Wallets.
Over the next 24 hours I must have been asked 1,000,000 times when we were going to make the wallets. 999,975 of those time was by Jack alone. I couldn't take it anymore and I caved. So today "we" built our Duck Tape wallets. Turns out I made ANOTHER mistake because this wasn't a project my kids could really do. I wound up building three wallets all by myself.
You know you want one too!
How to Make a Duck/Duct Tape Wallet
What you will need:
- Duct Tape (I used Duck Brand)
- Exacto Knife
- Ruler
- Cutting mat or board
Directions:
Step 1: Tear off 4 strips of tape about 9 inches long
Step 2: Layer them on top of one another overlapping each piece about 1/2 inch
Step 3: Rip 4 more strips of tape and layer them onto the sheet you made in steps 1 and 2 leaving about 1/2 inch at the top.
Step 4: Fold down top
Step 5: Flip over and fold down bottom (which for some reason I have pictured at the top oops)
Step 6: Use a ruler and the knife and make a clean edge on your right side.
Step 7: Measure your sheet so that it is 8 and 1/2 inches long and cut a clean edge on the left side. Set aside. (The sheet should be about 6 inches tall).
Step 8: Tear off two 5 inch strips and layer them as you did in steps 1 and 2.
Step 9: Tear off two more 5 inch strips and layer them as in step 3 (be sure to leave about 1/2 inch exposed at the top)
Step 10: Fold down the top edge
Step 11: Flip over and fold up the bottom edge and trim to 4inches. Set aside. (This is one part of your wallet pocket).
Step 12: Repeat steps 8 to 11 to create a second wallet pocket.
Step 13: Rip two 9 inch pieces of tape and stick them together sticky side to sticky side.
Step 14: Make a clean edge on the right and left and then trim to make two 4 inch pieces.
Step 15: Tear a 5 inch piece of tape and then rip it down the middle (it need not be perfect).
Step 16: Fold one strip over the top of each 4 inch piece and trim like so. (These are the second parts of your pocket).
Step 17: Stack all THREE pocket pieces on top of one another. These should be approximately 3 inches high (trim if necessary).
Step 18: Repeat steps 13 through 17 to make the second pocket.
Step 19: Rip a 5 inch piece of tape and then tear it down the middle.
Step 20: Grab a credit card (or the like) to measure and make sure your pockets will be big enough
Step 21: Take one of the strips and wrap around the left hand side and then trim. Leave the right hand side open (for now)
Step 22: Repeat steps 20 and 21 with the OTHER pocket and this time close the right hand side leaving the left side open (for now).
Step 23: Grab your full sheet you set aside earlier and fold it in half to mark the middle. Add your pre-made pockets to the top with the close end in the middle.
Step 24: Tear a 9 inch strip of tape and rip it down the middle. Add it to the TOP of the wallet and wrap it around the back. Trim.
Step 25: Tear a 5 inch strip of tape and rip it down the center.
Step 26: Fold the Wallet back in half. Use each half to close the right and left hand outer edge of the wallet and trim.
Step 27: Tear a 9 inch strip and then rip it in half. Use it to close the bottom of the wallet by folding it under and then trim.
There you have it folks!
A VERY useful $3 wallet. And one happy kid.
Is that your wallet in your pocket?
Fill it up!
He's loaded!
I made Nicholas the exact same one as Jack and he wasn't into posing for pics. Ella was willing and able to pose with her pink zebra wallet.
The first wallet I made took me about 30 minutes to make, but the second and third only took about 10 minutes each. Once you know what you're doing it's super easy. Let me know if any of my directions don't make sense and I'll try to clarify.
Happy Wallet Making.
