This really isn't a typical "how-to" as I don't think there is a right or wrong way to make this craft. It is, however, an spark to get your creative fire going and see what you can come up with. This is just what we did and we had a LOT of fun doing it. We only spent about an hour, but my kids would still be working if I let them.
Christmas Tree Craft Stick Ornament
Supplies Needed:
- Wooden Craft Sticks or Popsicle Sticks
- Glue (I used hot glue)
- Embellishments
- pipe cleaners
- pom poms
- glitter glue
- glitter
- Scissors
- Markers, Paint or Crayons (not pictured)
First Color your sticks the color you desire. We set out to make Christmas trees so we got busy using green markers. We had Sharpies and washable markers and both worked great. You could also use paint, but I opted not to as we only had a short period of time and I wasn't interested in waiting for it to dry.
Next cut the desired number of "branches" for your Christmas tree. Start off with the full length of one stick and cut each one shorter and shorter until you have the desired number of branches needed to make your tree.
It should look something like this:
Now glue your pattern onto the "base stick". I opted to use hot glue. You could easily use school glue as it is strong enough, but it would require additional time to dry before you could decorate it because of fragility. Again, we only had a short period of time so I used hot glue to speed up the process.
Once your tree is assembled you can let the kids get to decorating. My kids used the glitter like it was going out of style and added a lot of the glitter pom poms.
Did I mention the glitter? Oh my, the glitter!
After they finished their decorating I cut a pipe cleaner to the appropriate length and made a loop to attach to the back for a hanger.
My kids REALLY loved doing this and it got their creative juices flowing. They had all kinds of ideas about what to do with the popsicle sticks. We wound up making some snowflakes too, but their imaginations were running wild when they saw the 1000 craft sticks. We'll definitely be getting them out again.
For now these are the creations we made today:

What do you think? Have you made popsicle stick creations before? Will you try it?
