I have to tell you about something I've learned over the years. Icing does not a good glue make. So I cheat. There I admit it. I'm not a perfect mom, I cheat! I put these suckers together with hot glue first before the kids even see them. It saves a lot of tears and a lot of heartache when everything falls apart. Who eats the house anyway? Wait... does anyone actually eat these?
Anyway, we started out with our hot glued gingerbread pieces and the kids were VERY excited to tackle this project.
Then I gave them the icing and they went to town. I just love how diligently Ella works. She's very careful to make a perfectly beautiful house and was meticulous (as a 7 year old can be) in making it.
Nicholas cares less about things being perfect. He more into the making of the house than the outcome. He liked making snow all over the place and on top of EVERYTHING.
Jack was also very determined to make a beautiful creation. He REALLY took his time and wanted to do everything himself. He was especially proud of his creation.
Making gingerbread houses is definitely not for the faint of heart. It is positively a HUGE mess. I have learned over the years, however, to just step back and let them do their thing. Luckily most of the mess was kept on the table and we had no catastrophes.

Even with all the mess, it's still one of my favorite traditions too. How can these tiny masterpieces not make you smile?
