Anyway on with today's post....
When I was a little girl, I loved Christmas. I loved everything from putting up the Christmas tree to opening up the presents on Christmas morning. My family's holiday season was rich with tradition and my childhood memories are chock full of happiness.
I remember when I was little all the things we did together that made Christmas feel like Christmas. A lot of the traditions I've tried to carry on with my family. One of my favorite memories, however, I've never been able to carry on with my kids-- that is, until tonight.
When I was little we would all get into our pajamas and start watching our favorite Christmas movie that was on the TV that night. It was usually cold and sometimes snowy (that would make it perfect), but the night was always long with waiting.
I would go to the window a thousand times peeking out to see if he was coming (he never was). Until finally you would hear it. The fire whistle. Santa was coming on the firetruck. You could hear him for so long before you could finally see him, but when you caught that first glimpse it was pure excitement.
But then... he was there, with all the brights lights flashing and the siren's going, Santa was there. I remember running out the door chasing the firetruck as if it was going to miss the scurry of kids coming out the door and pass our house.
He never missed us. How could I be so silly? He always stopped and collected our wish list items and handed us a candy cane. It didn't matter if I had already seen Santa at the mall, Christmas was never complete until I'd seen Santa on the firetruck.
I don't know who was more excited about today, me or the kids. I was so happy and smiling watching them with Santa and seeing them collect their chocolate bars (moving up in the world). I'm not sure they were really fazed by the whole thing, nor convinced he was the "real" Santa. Nevertheless, I like to think I watched a childhood memory being created today.
So tell me, is this a Pittsburgh thing or did/does your Santa visit you on the firetruck?
Do/Did you love it as much as I do?
